What is BPM? BPM or business process management, is the practice of improving a company’s performance by analyzing, monitoring, and optimizing business processes. BPM is an effective method for improving process visibility, increasing effectiveness, and impacting cost/revenue generation. In short, BPM is the act of driving sustainability and process improvement.

Business process management is often understood as a business practice that encompasses several technologies, techniques, and structured methods. This includes any software or initiative that enables the identification and modification of existing processes so that they align with future efficiency goals.

Tips for a Successful BPM Strategy:

  • Organize: Organize your efforts to focus on improving outcomes rather than tasks. This will help keep your BPM efforts focused on valuable activities.
  • Correct: Make important corrections and automate when applicable.
  • Establish: Establish new processes and assign ownership to maintain continued effectiveness.
  • Standardize: Standardize processes and enable them to be scalable and manageable while reducing errors and risks.
  • Continue: Allow continuous change so that improvements can be further enhanced.
  • Improve: Ideally, a business process management strategy should seek to improve existing processes rather than building completely new ones. A fresh process will often take more time to implement, and thus reduce the chance of achieving increased gains or benefits.

Important BPM Steps:

  • Map: Before you can begin managing your processes, you must first visualize all internal functions/processes. While BPM was originally designed to address process automation though the use of technology, it has grown to include the improvement human-driven processes as they relate to the use of technology.
  • Set: Establish what metrics are important to measure as they relate to your desired goals/outcomes. These should be metrics that can be measured before and after process improvements have been made in order to measure success.
  • Measure: Begin collecting your data. This is a critical step for both pre and post process improvements.
  • Analyze: Interpret collected data to determine optimal process improvements. Data analysis should be a continued process in order to maintain consistent process improvements.
  • Re-design: Make changes to your process in order to address bottlenecks or other shortcomings discovered by process measuring /analysis.
  • Implement: Select and implement improvements proposed in your re-designing phase.
  • Monitor: Continue to watch and collect important metrics for ongoing control and insight into processes. Monitoring your processes is the only way to accurately identify a successful BPM initiative.
  • Automate: When a process becomes incredibly efficient, it may be time to consider automation. By automating a process, you are able to further increase its efficiency. Automation will allow your staff to perform multiple tasks simultaneously – saving your organization time while further improving effectiveness.
